We would like to hold an information start up meeting in January. Please post a comment to let me know if you are interested and would like to be added to the email list and if there is a day during the week of 14th-18th that would work for you. Roots and Shoots

We have decided that it will be $5 for each family wanting to join Roots and Shoots. This will help cover leaders cost and any supplies we need. After that if we need money for projects each family wanting to participate in that particular project will split the cost.

I would like people to comment as to which day of the week would work best for them. We would like to start meeting once a month for activities in January. In order to accommodate the most people I need to know what works for you. If you have no preference and any day is good please let me know that too.

Please leave comments below so everyone can see. You commments will not appear until I approve them so please don’t submit the same comment multiple times.

Thanks and have a great holiday season.

Roots and Shoots Meeting Summary

I our attendance at the meeting was small, but I have had several emails from people wanting to be involved but unable to attend the meeting. So here is a summary of what we covered and what still needs to be decided.

First a little background information about the organization. Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute, it is a powerful, youth-driven, global network of more than 8,000 groups in almost 100 countries. Together, youth of all ages are taking action to improve our world through service learning projects that promote care and concern for animals, the environment and the human community.

The group we are starting is specifically geared towards homeschoolers as we will be doing most of our activities in the daytime during the week. The group is open to all ages. Projects for the younger members will be on a local scale so that they are able to see the results of their action. Global type projects will be available for teens. Of course anyone of any age will be free to join in where ever they wish.

The Current campaigns that are going on through Roots and Shoots are: the Giant Peace Dove, Rebirth the Earth, Trees for tomorrow, and Reusable Bags. For more information on these projects see the Roots and Shoots site. Groups can choose which campaigns they want to participate.

Other activities suggested for our group are: Christmas Bird Count, a pet food drive for the local animal shelter, helping at the local animal shelter, river and/or trail clean ups, nursing home visits, helping/visiting a local CSA, and worm composting. Of course there are many more things we could do. All and any ideas that meet the mission of Roots and Shoots are welcome.

Other activities our group could do might include local hikes and birding.

Things that still need to be decided.

1. What day do we want to meet and how often. It has been suggested we meet once a month to start and add a hiking day and possibly a birding day as the group grows.

2. Leadership dues are $50 for the year. Do we want to charge a small member fee to help cover these cost? Also some projects like the Peace Dove require supplies. How do we want to pay for things?

Due to the busy holiday season we will not be having a meeting in December. However we may meet up if we decide to do the Christmas Bird Count. I will post any information and updates here, so check back.
